imp is a funky store on NE Alberta Street where customers say, “This place makes me happy!” A design studio and sewing workroom, as well as a shop, imp is the creation of Christine Karhi, whose background ranges from designing and making fashion sold in Lord and Taylor, Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue, to an Ann Arbor children’s clothing company, to the creation of sewn interiors in San Francisco. Now, having chosen Portland for its egalitarian creativity, Chris brings her 35 year collaboration with design and fabric to imp to express a playfulness and spirit of life happily met. Her hope is to help inspire hand-craft, colorful environments that marry deft technique with a developed aesthetic, yielding welcoming, warm homes. Featuring the jewelry of Laura Baxter, by boe and Lily Lambert, bedding from Pine Cone Hill, David Fussenegger’s cotton fleece blankets, ceramics by Courtney Murphy and Diana Fayt, vintage woman’s clothing, glassware from Roost and Morocco, specialty yarn by Ozark Handspun, the designs of Tord Boontje and recycled inner tube bags from Blackbird, along with aprons and pajamas and Handmade by Clare. imp is playful color and textile sprites, a place of adornment for your flights of fancy.
